Transforming Legacy Aircraft Documentation From PDFs to DITA XML
Webinar summary
On Wednesday April 5, Componize and Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL) co-hosted a webinar demonstrating the benefits of moving to structured content titled: From Unstructured to Structured Content: Transforming Legacy Aircraft Documentation From PDFs to DITA XML
The aim, to demonstrate the advantages for manufacturer creating content using unstructured methods to create the technical and nontechnical documentation.
Some of the advantages of structured content authoring for manufacturers:
- Reuse ensures that content duplication is kept to a minimum and is properly managed when it cannot be avoided. This helps to maintain and update the documentation
- Consistency.
Information architecture applied to the structured content helps authors and reader maintain a document plan that remains consistent across product documentation, but also cross-organization wherever the architecture is implemented - Collaboration
Components of the content managed in a single system leads to improved collaboration between writers, but also allows input from non-writers like Subject Matter Experts and other departments who might have a stake in the documentation, either as input givers or as output verifiers. - Single-Source content => Multiformat output => Omnichannel delivery
From a single type of document DITA XML, you have not just the possibility to publish content to multiple formats (PDF, HTML, EPUB), but also to deliver these formats in an intelligent manner to multiple platforms (websites, knowledge-bases, print, chatbots, AI training/generation). The possibilities are endless, given the flexibility of XML.
With the right partners, organizations can plan for and migrate their content from legacy document formats to XML, and start taking advantage of these benefits.
